Opossums are members of the marsupial order Didelphimorphia (/daɪˌdɛlfɪˈmɔːrfiə/) endemic to the Americas. The largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere, it comprises 93 species in 18 genera. Opossums originated in South America and entered North America in the Great American Interchange following the connection of North and South America. WitrynaApproximately 78 marsupial species inhabit South America, representing roughly 10% of its terrestrial mammalian diversity (Kirsch 1977; Streilein 1982), and, although only three of the 15 marsupial families are found in South America, together they represent about 30% of the world’s total of 250 species.
