WebbI can't speak to the quality of the particle board used inside the karlby countertops but it IS a countertop, they should last a number of years at minimum or people would be furious redoing a kitchen after 5 years. And as a carpenter I can vouch that engineered products 'like' particle board can actually be stronger than solid real wood.
