S&W has been stamping the model number in there since about 1957 or so. My copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson stops at serial number prefix CEF at Aug 2000. S&W indicates the date a firearm was shipped, not manufactured. This is why certain serial numbers on older guns sometimes show them as shipping after a newer gun.
